Telcos to dominate storage market

Posted in General, Storage Management by Larry Lamers

Some time ago Scott McNealy stated that the network is the computer - well that applies to storage also.

A few years back I worked on an Advanced TCA effort to standardize storage in telco racks. Thinking about that led to my current belief that for the majority of folks and businesses - those outside the Fortune 1000 - that your telco is most likely to wind up as your storage company.

Well, well, who is at Storage Neworking World but Verizon - selling data services. They said that they have been selling storage and disaster recovery for more than a decade already. So while Google and Yahoo may be your user interface for access to your data my bet is that you local telco is where it will reside. The network is your storage - and who owns the connectivity to small business and the users - your local telco.

This technology combined with iSCSI lets Intel extend the “standards-based” gear it’s more familiar with higher-up the storage food chain to where Fibre Channel kit plays today.
