Wherefore art thou Romeo?

Posted in General, Storage Management by Larry Lamers

If Romeo is storage management and Juliet is SAS then we have another love affair made in heaven. That is, of course, if the parents, RAID and Virtualization, allow it to happen. As in any great love affair only time will tell.

So why would Romeo (Storage Management) be so interested in Juliet (SAS). Simply put SAS is the latest beauty on the scene and has the best set of capabilities to provide users with a failsafe storage environment. SAS is the culmination of the experience gathered since the late 70’s on what a storage interface needs to be. Many of the same folks that worked on SCSI, ATA, Fibre Channel and SATA poured their experience in SAS.

Like those old time Christmas lights if one fails they all fail - that was parallel SCSI. SAS being point-to-point does not have that issue. More importantly, SAS has characteristics that allow for load balancing and failover to be built into the lower layers of RAID software that will make the user experience even better.

If RAID and Virtualization layers evolve to optimize on what SAS offers, then Storage Management can deliver what the customer wants: a seamless, failsafe environment that seperates the hardware failures (remember Everything Fails) from the data integrity. Storage Management will address hardware failures by ordering replacement drives/controllers/power supplies/etc. and generating the work order to get the replacement installed (Got Management). The owner of the data will never see it happen - a seamless experience.

So if Romeo and Juliet get together the future holds promise.
