Would you keep your business critical MS Office documents on the Internet?

Posted in General, Application Environments, Advisor - Joe Disher by Joe Disher

On CNN.com today I read an article about Microsoft’s “Windows Live” online initiative which can be found at http://www.live.com/. The premise is that customers will be able to use Microsoft applications and services remotely from anywhere as long as they have an Internet connection and a web browser.

I’m not going to go into the values of having applications and services available over the web – I think that’s a personal preference for each individual and company to have to decide. I do however wonder about the prospect of trusting Microsoft to maintain your valuable corporate or personal data at their offsite facility. There’s other companies that allow customers to store and backup their data over the Internet and I think they present a similar question to customers about trusting their data outside of corporate walls. The real question is around the ulterior motives of Microsoft (to take over the world) and how willing customers are to trust the giant to protect their data.

Sound off and let me know what you think.

Blog ya later!

Two (sort of) oxymorons in this article:

    1) mission critical ms office documents - hey that says a lot of about the dumb way IT is done today. Is it any wonder companies lose 3 million SSNs on a stolen laptop?

    2) trusting microsoft - HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! There is only one thing we can always trust him to do. Forget virus protection, get a chastity belt.
