Posted in Storage Interconnects & RAID, Advisor - Tom Treadway by Tom TreadwayI really try to avoid blogs-about-blogs (BAB - I just made that up), but there was an interesting post over on DrunkenData that discusses how physical storage size relates to final logical storage size on a NetApp box after a variety of techniques are used, such as RAID, snapshot, etc. There is some odd disagreement on that site about whether NetApp is cheating their customers by wasting a bunch of physical storage.
For example, one of the complaints is that a RAID-6, or RAID-DP in NetApp terms, eliminates two drives worth of storage. A 6-drive RAID-6 has a 67% effective usage due to those two drives being used for data protection. Duh. That’s pretty much the way RAID-6 works. You can’t do anything about it.
Anyway, the post is here if you want to read it. Look for my comments.

Tom - thanks for the replies over there. Yep, no getting around physics… and you may have taught me something about Adaptec’s RAID 5.
